Answers

  • Yahoo webcam will not work

In order to get the webcam feature of Yahoo messenger to work with the AR315W you need to set up port forwarding for port 5100 on the computer that will be using the webcam. Click here for instructions on configuring port forwarding .

  • "PPPoE server not found" error message

If you are configuring your router for use with DSL and you get the error message “PPPoE server not found. Please check to see that your ISP is using PPPoE.” It means that your internet service provider is not using PPPoE and you need to change the login method.

First try selecting “None” instead of “PPPoE” when you are going through the setup wizard. If the test fails again, you will need to contact your internet service provider to find out exactly what kind of login method they use so that you can select the correct method in the setup wizard.

  • No internet access after successful test

The first thing you will want to do is check the status of the router.

Log in to the web based configuration at http://192.168.1.1
Click on Status and read what it says under Internet.

Internet Connection should show up as active. If it doesn’t, try unplugging the power to your cable/DSL modem (not the router) for 30 seconds, then check the status again by opening a new Internet Explorer window.

If Internet connection reads as Active and you are still not able to get on the internet, look at the Internet IP Address. If your internet IP address is one of the following, that means that your cable/dsl modem is also a router:

    192.168.x.x
    172.16.x.x
    10.0.x.x

For this situation, you will need to disable the routing function of your AirLink router.

  • Test fails while trying to configure the router for use with a cable modem

If you are using a cable modem and the test fails when you come to the end of the setup wizard, try unplugging the power from your cable modem for 10 minutes. A lot of the time, cable modems will not recognize the router unless they have been reset for a long enough amount of time. When you plug the power back in, let it sit for about five minutes so that the cable modem can reconnect to the server. This will also give it enough time to recognize the router. After it has been on for five minutes, try getting on the internet. If it still does not work, go through the setup wizard again.

  • Unstable or no wireless connection

If your router is working fine with your wired computers but your wireless computers will not connect, you may be getting some interference. Try changing the channels on the router to eliminate as much interference as possible.

If that doesn’t help, make sure that all of the drivers for your wireless cards are up to date.

  • Setting up encryption

To configure encryption for your ar315w, you first need to log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on Wireless on the left-hand side

Scroll down to the Wireless Security section

    Click Configure

Click on the pull-down menu next to security system and select the type of encryption you wish to use. (WEP is the most commonly used type of encryption)

    WEP Instructions:

Click on Authentication and select “Shared Key”

Select a key size (the higher the number selected, the longer the key is and the better protection you have)

    Select “Key 1”

Enter a word in the “Passphrase” box and click “Generate”. The screen will come back with a key value in the “Key 1” box. You will need to write this down. Make sure that you write it down exactly as it is listed here, otherwise, you will have to repeat the entire process over again.

    Click Save

Once it is done saving, you are finished and ready to enter the encryption information into your adapters.

    WPA-PSK Instructions:
Please make sure that your wireless adapters support WPA-PSK before using this type of encryption.

Enter a key of at least eight characters in the PSK box

Make sure encryption is set to “TKIP”

    Click Save

Once it is done saving, you are finished and ready to enter the encryption information into your adapters.

If you make a mistake at any point, or write down the incorrect key, you can always gain access to the router through a computer that is connected to the router with a wire.

  • Enabling DMZ

To set up DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) for one of your computers, you first need to log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on the Advanced button located on the left-hand side

    Click on Internet

Scroll down to the Multi-DMZ Section

Put a check mark next to the first line under “Enable”

    >From the pull-down menu, select the name/IP address of the computer you will be using with DMZ

    Click Save

DMZ is now enabled. Please note that you can only have one computer/IP Address configured for DMZ at a time.

  • Using the wireless router as an access point

In order to configure the AirLink+ AR315W as an access point, you first need to log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on the LAN link located on the left-hand side

In order to be able to communicate with the AR315W when it is connected to your network, you need to change the IP address of the router to something that is compatible with your network. The first three blocks of numbers of the IP address have to be the same as your existing network. If your network uses a gateway of 192.168.0.1, the AR315W needs to look like this: 192.168.0.x, where x is any number between 1 and 254. The subnet mask has to be exactly the same as the subnet mask that your other computers use.

Change the IP address and the subnet mask of the router to match your existing network.

    Un-check the DHCP Server box

    Click Save

To connect your AR315W to your existing router, you need to connect a cable from one of the LAN ports on your main router to one of the LAN ports on the AR315W. You will not be using the WAN port on the AR315W.

  • Changing channels

Log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on the Wireless link located on the left-hand side

    For Region choose “USA”

Select the channel you would like to use from the “Channel No” box

    Click Save

Unplug the power from the router for ten seconds and then plug it back in

    Restart your wireless computers

    Try to connect

If you are having problems connecting to your wireless router, the best thing to do is go through each of the channels starting with channel one. Follow the instructions listed above each time you change the channel, and eventually you will find one that allows you to achieve a stable connection.

  • Upgrading firmware

Find out which firmware release your router is currently using. There are two different releases, you need to download the appropriate firmware for your router. If you download the wrong one, you will DAMAGE your router.

Log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on the STATUS link, which is located on the left hand side

Next to system, you will see the release version. Based on that information, download the correct firmware version for your router. Unzip the file to a location that will be easy to find later (a good place is on your desktop).

It is very important that the firmware upgrade process is not interrupted for any reason. If it is interrupted, you will DAMAGE your router. Therefore, the upgrade should be done from a computer that is wired to the router. You will also want to turn off all other computers and disconnect your internet connection from the router, so that there is no chance that those computers will disturb the router during the upgrade process. Close any unnecessary programs running on the computer you are using for the upgrade. Now you are ready for the upgrade.

Log in to the routers configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)

Click on the ADMINISTRATION link, which is located on the left hand side

Click on the UPGRADE FIRMWARE button

Enter your routers password in the “Wireless Router Password” box

    Click browse
Search for and select the firmware file, Then click “Open”

    Click “Start Upgrade”

Do not stop the upgrade for ANY reason. Once the upgrade is complete, you need to do a factory reset on your router by holding down the reset button on the back of the router for 15 seconds. If you do not complete this step, you will not be able to access your router.

  • Port forwarding

Port forwarding is needed if you are using an application on your computer that acts as a server. Common servers are FTP, SSH, and remote access programs like VNC. These programs require certain ports to be “opened” or tunneled through the routers firewall so that remote users can access them. You will need to know the specific ports needed and then you can do the following:

    - Log in to the routers web based configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)
    - Click on Advanced
    - Click on Virtual Servers

The Servers box lists pre-configured ports for the most common applications. If the program you are trying to use is already listed, you can click on it to bring up its information which will be listed in the Properties box. To turn the rule on:

    - Check the Enable box
    - From the PC (Server) pull down menu, choose the computer that the server is on
    - Click Update Selected Server

If an entry does not exist for the program you are trying to use, you can easily add it:

    - Click on Clear form
    - Check the box that is on the left of Enable
    - In the box on the right of Enable, type in a name for your rule
    - From the PC (Server) pull down menu, choose the computer that the server is on
    - Select the protocol needed. If you do not know the protocol that is needed, contact the creator of the program for that information.
    - Enter the Internal ports that are being used. If you are only using one port you can type the same number into each box. If you need to enable a range of ports, type in the first port of the range first, and the last port of the range last.
    - You can type in the same numbers in the External (WAN) Ports
    - Then click add as new server

When the page comes back you will see your new rule listed in the Servers box.
